Principal’s Message

August 18, 2025

Dear Parents/Guardians:

It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to a new school year at Whiton Elementary.  We are certain that the coming year will be filled with wonderful learning, and that your student(s) will have the types of experiences that lead to warm memories of school.  New this year, we will use ParentSquare to communicate with families, so please be sure to use this link to download the app.

First Day of School

Our first day of school will be Thursday, September 4th.  All students will report directly to their homeroom classroom upon arrival (unless in need of breakfast - see below), and there will be many adults available to help students find their way.  We will be using the side gym doors for morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up. Please bring your driver’s license or ID for pick-up. Our dismissal process usually takes a little longer until our students become familiar with this process, so please be patient as our buses run a little late the first few days of school. If your student will not be taking the bus and will be an afternoon pick up, please email wesoffice@branchburg.k12.nj.us and your student’s teacher by 2:00 p.m.

GENESIS

Our summer mailing is done electronically with some information included in this email and some found in Genesisour student information system, which is available today, August 18th at 4:00 p.m. Please take the time to read each piece of information and electronically mark your understanding of each item in Genesis as those items require a response from you.  Please also take note of our Genesis link below (https://parents.c2.genesisedu.net/branchburg).  It is imperative that all families review and sign off on each document, as completing this step is the only way you will be able to learn who will be your student’s teacher.  If you have questions and/or need help completing this process (or need to use a computer), please call the main office at 908-371-0842 x.0 or stop by Monday-Thursday between 8:30 and 3:30.

Helpful information on Genesis can be found here in English and Spanish

If your student is new to our school, you will receive an email from Genesis with your log on credentials.  If your student has already been a part of Whiton, please use the same log on credentials that you used to access their report card last school year.  Once you have logged into Genesis, please click the “Forms” tab on the top center of the screen.  You will need to read through and acknowledge each form in Genesis. Once you have acknowledged the required forms, your student’s homeroom teacher will be made available beginning at 4:15pm on Monday  August 25th.

Busing information will also be found in Genesis and you will hear from our transportation department, when the information will be available in Genesis.

Visitor and Early Dismissal Procedure

All visitors must sign in using our iPad located in the entryway.  Please bring your driver’s license for scanning. After signing in, you will be buzzed into the main office to receive your visitor badge.

We can only accommodate a limited number of people in the entryway at one time.  You may need to wait outside the main door while we clear the lobby of visitors.  Please plan accordingly and allow extra time to complete the sign-in process and visit our building.  Thank you for your patience and understanding.

HERE ARE SOME TIPS FOR THE UPCOMING SCHOOL YEAR:

1. Whiton operates on a 6 Day Cycle schedule where a different special area class occurs each day.  On this schedule we start with Day 1, and the following days will continue forward until Day 6. After Day 6, the cycle repeats starting with Day 1.  During this schedule, if school is closed for any reason, that cycle day will be moved to the day school reopens.  The primary reason for this schedule is to ensure the students receive balanced special area programs (Art, Music, Physical Education, Technology, World Language, and Library).

2. Please place your student’s name and teacher on a piece of paper or index card on the top or front of your student’s backpack for at least the first week of school so we can help direct them to their homeroom.  This is for all preschool through third grade students since even our older students have been out of the building for some time and may need a bit of direction.

 3. Our One School, One Book this year is Stick and Stone by Beth Ferry.  I hope you and your student(s) enjoyed this book as much as we did.  If you have not yet read it, please do!

4. Students who ride the bus are expected to sit in their assigned bus seats each day and remain buckled. Riding the bus is a privilege!

5. Students should bring a healthy, nut-free snack (no tree nuts or peanut products please) and a bottle of water for snack time each day.  Please also label all student water bottles, lunch boxes, clothing, etc. as this will help to keep our lost and found items to a minimum.

6. All students will eat lunch in the cafeteria with their homeroom class.  Lunch is for purchase and costs $3.75A school lunch that meets federal nutritional standards includes these 5 food components:

1. Fruit (2): Fresh, Chilled or 4 oz Fruit Juice

2. Two Vegetable Choices

3. Low Fat or Fat Free Milk

4. Whole Grains

5. Meat/Meat Alternative

Students should select at least 3 of the 5 components, including a fruit or vegetable, for a complete meal.

a. Should students desire second helpings or additional a la carte options, a ala carte prices will be charged to the student’s account.

b. Please note that students whose family financial circumstances meet eligibility standards for free or reduced price meals must submit a free or reduced lunch application to the school to be eligible for additional benefits related to P-EBT, state funding, or other school benefits that may be implemented throughout the school year.

c. Additionally, the student’s free or reduced status during the 2024-2025 school year will carry over into the first thirty (30) days of the 2025-2026 school year.  Only those students who were deemed eligible this school year will receive free or reduced lunches at the start of this school year.  Applications are available on the District website.

d. You are able to set up an online account for your student for purchasing breakfast/lunch. Please find the link here

REFERENDUM UPDATE:
Join the Conversation
As we move closer to the September 16 bond referendum, we want to personally invite you to be part of the conversation about what this vote means for the future of our schools and community. We’ve created a short video that walks through the highlights of the proposed projects and how they would support safer, more sustainable, and future-ready learning environments across the district. I encourage you to take a look and share it with others. We’re also hosting two upcoming events where you can learn more and ask questions:
●     Virtual Community Forum – Wednesday, August 20 at 6:30 PM (Zoom link available here on our website)
●     In-Person Forum & Stony Brook School Tour – Monday, September 8 at 6:30 PM (Presentation and Q&A followed by a guided tour of the building).  District leaders, board members, teachers, and our architectural and financial advisors will be on hand to answer questions.
To explore full project details, visual renderings, FAQs, voting logistics, and more, visit our website. You may also email us at referendum@branchburg.k12.nj.us  with any additional questions. An advertisement for a bond referendum at Whiton Elementary School, featuring a playground.
