For many parents, this is the first time your child will be away from home for an extended period of time. At Whiton Elementary School I offer support and nursing care as your child travels through their early years of growth and development.

Please feel free to contact me in the health office if you have any health related questions and/or concerns.

Your Young Student...

In the first few years of school, children are adjusting to larger groups. For many children, they are coming into contact with many viruses such as the common cold which may be a new exposure to their young developing bodies. The young students are building their immune systems. Understandably, they are more susceptible to disease.

In order to help prevent the spread of many viruses, it is wise to keep your child at home if he/she has the following symptoms:

Headache, earache, sore throat, coughing, inflammation of eyes, nasal drainage, enlarged glands (lymph nodes), rash or skin eruption, nausea, pain, or over fatigue.

Children should ONLY return to school if they have been:

  • Fever free (less than 100 degrees F) for 24 hours
  • Able to eat and drink for 24 hours without causing vomiting and/or diarrhea
  • Able to return to a normal activity level

If your child contracts a communicable disease such as strep throat, chicken pox or head lice, the school nurse needs to be notified.
