Hurricane Relief

Whiton Helps Save the Children!
Dear Whiton Families,

We have all heard and seen pictures about the devastation caused by some of the most recent hurricanes; Harvey, Irma and Maria. As a result of these natural disasters, hundreds of displaced families, including many with infants and toddlers, continue to arrive in shelters and are left homeless.

At Whiton, we would like to do our part to support those in need. We have decided to collect funds to be donated to the Save the Children Federation. This organization provides shelters with the necessary equipment and services to keep children safe. Their emergency teams are delivering family-friendly relief supplies such as cribs, strollers, changing tables, baby shampoo, diapers and portable tubs. They are providing kid friendly areas in shelters so that kids can play and learn during this difficult time. They are providing staff to help children deal with these difficult circumstances and helping to restore child-care, early education programs and children’s emotional well-being.

As a school, we want to teach our students the importance of helping others. We also want our students to know that there can still be fun while we work to support others. Our staff has volunteered to have “different hairdos” for the day in support of the cause. This includes a shaving cream hairdo, dyed hair (using temporary colored hair spray), or silly string hairdos. During the week of October 2, we will have donation containers in each of our lunches. Students can place their donations into these containers and for every $100 that is raised, each grade level will be able to provide one staff member a hairdo. During lunches, on Monday, October 9, we will select a few students to help create these hairdos. Beginning on Monday, October 2, we ask that students bring donations into school in a separate, labeled envelope (not to be confused with lunch money) and homeroom teachers will remind students to take these envelopes to lunch during the week to begin fundraising.

Tomorrow our students will view a video with myself, Mrs. Kries and Ms. Reedy explaining the purpose of this fundraiser. Our goal is to help others in need, while also working with our students to understand that everyone can make a positive difference in the world.

Thank you for your support in our efforts to support the Save the Children Federation.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Dee Shober
